OLED Materials

Premium OLED materials for innovative light sources

In recent years, Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology has gained increasing importance in light sources, especially general-space illumination and large-area lighting. As one of the leading manufacturers of OLED materials, EMD offers a complete product portfolio of materials for OLED lighting applications under the brand name livilux®.

Your advantages - High-purity and high-stability materials

EMD is unique in its range and depth of capabilities across the entire range of established and developing OLED material technologies, from cutting-edge small molecule OLED materials for evaporation processing to high-performance polymer materials for soluble systems. Based on extensive experience in manufacturing OLED materials and a strong worldwide intellectual property position, we can supply high-purity and high-stability materials that exactly meet customer requirements. In a strategic partnership with DELO, a leading company for industrial adhesives, EMD is also developing sealant solutions for professional OLED encapsulations.

Applications - The colors of OLED lighting

OLED technology makes new, unique light sources possible - with high efficiency, totally flat form factor, low voltage, and very homogeneous light distribution. OLED lighting devices can be made flexible, color-adjustable, or transparent in off state. These properties make OLED lighting devices ideal for general-space illumination and large-area light sources.

The technology - How do OLEDs work?

Based on either small molecule (SM) or polymer (PLED) materials and technologies, OLEDs work by the passage of an electrical current from two conducting electrodes through layers of organic semiconductor materials on a substrate, usually indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass, silicon, or a special plastic substrate. Light emission is caused by electrically generated electron-hole pairs forming neutral excited states that relax to a ground state with the emission of light. Importantly, each individual OLED material has its own characteristic emission color. As OLEDs are fabricated into extremely thin layer structures and usually need only a single substrate, they are thin, light, and cost-efficient.
