Organic Electronics

World-leading performance: Organic electronics from Merck

Under the brand name lisicon®, Merck offers complete organic electronics (OE) material solutions for organic thin-film transistors (OTFT) in display applications as customized and ready-to-print formulations - from high-performance printable semiconductors to dielectrics and surface treatment chemicals.

Your advantages - High mobility, low off current and good uniformity

Merck's innovative printable semiconductor formulations are designed to achieve multiple performance advantages, e.g. high mobility, low off current, high on/off ratio, and good uniformity and repeatability.  Thanks to the solution processability of lisicon® formulations, a variety of fabrication techniques can be used from spin coating to ink-jet printing to other roll-to-roll processes such as gravure and flexographic printing. Their excellent air stability and reliability enable lisicon® formulations to be processed in ambient environments, giving flexibility in substrate choice and ease of manufacturing. Electronic devices fabricated using lisicon® formulations show exceptional lifetimes with respect to shelf life and device operation.

Applications - Revolutionizing display design and manufacturing

Organic electronics is an advanced and innovative branch of electronics that has the potential to revolutionize display design and manufacturing techniques and enable the rapid commercialization of lightweight and flexible displays in high-throughput and potentially low-cost manufacturing processes.

Printable OE formulations from Merck can be customized to application-specific requirements and are compatible with mass-production techniques, allowing a greater freedom during display design and creating new applications. They meet the demanding requirements of thin-film transistors for high-performance displays, providing excellent potential for applications such as E-paper or LCD (liquid crystal display) and OLED (organic light emitting diode) active matrix display driving. In addition, these formulations allow processing on substrates based on plastic, thin metal, or even paper, thereby opening up a wide range of future applications.

The technology - What is organic electronics?

OE materials use conjugated aromatic (very stable) carbon-based molecules with delocalized electronic systems tailored to exhibit optimum charge-transport properties. Merck incorporates these materials into ready-to-use ink formulations, enabling direct solution printing of the integrated circuitry, e. g. thin-film transistors (TFT), onto various surfaces. As demanded by high-performance applications, synthesis of these specialty materials is carried out under high-purity conditions, also considering environmental issues.
