Eusolex® UV-Pearls™: Simplifying suncare
“Double your SPF!” and give your customers powerful everyday UV-protection
With Eusolex® UV-Pearls™, Merck is changing the way effective suncare products are made. How? By taking proven organic UV filters and encasing them in silica microcapsules. These “pearls” allow hydrophobic actives to be added to the water phase of an emulsion. Further, encapsulation prevents from direct contact of the UV filter with the skin surface. For the formulator the encapsulation of hydrophobic UV filters allows for new formulation concepts and therefore new opportunities. For end-users, it means safe and pleasant sun protection at a time.
Double your SPF!
Eusolex® UV-Pearls™ can boost the in vivo SPF in particular formulations. Relating to the concentration of the embedded UV filter, the mere encapsulation leads to a distinct SPF increase versus to the same amount of free UV filter in formulation.
And that’s not all.
Our data show that the addition of the capsules to the water phase can even double the in vivo SPF of formulations.
As few as 5.4% Eusolex® UV-Pearls™ 2292 or Eusolex® UV-Pearls™ OMC (corresponding to just 2 % of the organic UV filter) pushed the SPF value of a sunscreen from 10 to 20.
Due to the very nice skin feeling of the aqueous dispersion, the cosmetic product will have improved haptics – compared to conventional water-soluble filters and versus conventional oil soluble UV filter alike.
Eusolex® UV-Pearls™ is easy to formulate and the encapsulation allows developing sunscreens with improved photostability of Avobenzone (BMDBM).
